T2. Protecting yield throughout seasonal change.
Posted on 14 May 2026
T2 Key Considerations
- Growers will need to be well prepared for all situations to protect crops adequately by assessing crops carefully.
- NIAB trials work indicates 67% of fungicide response is delivered at the T2 timing (GS 37 – 39). The flag leaf contributes to 40-45% of yield alone, so keeping both leaf 2 and the flag leaf clean from Septoria and rusts is vital.
- Consider the strengths and weaknesses of products and how these can be balanced to optimise disease control and spend.
- Consider a combination of both single and multisite chemistry at T2 to keep crops protected for longer. Clayton Canyon SC (500 g/L folpet) is an ideal multisite to include in the T2 tank-mix to protect crops further towards maturity at this timing and for the bolstering effect it has on partner products.
T2 Disease Focus…
Septoria disease pressure will increase in many crops if isolated showers or rainfall events occur in the next few weeks, and Septoria will be the key focus for T2 in many crops.
Yellow rust susceptible varieties or high-risk crops need careful attention at T2 (especially with the breakdown in resistance of the Yr15 gene). If earlier timings were not made or were less successful at reducing disease, then T2 programmes will benefit from addition of a strong yellow rust actives.
Brown rust has become increasingly important in susceptible varieties and later-drilled crops in recent seasons.
Fusarium where it is a problem, consider including prothioconazole, which can slow disease development. Fusarium primarily thrives in warm and wet weather so if we get some more rain it will be worth protecting those susceptible crops, especially in fields with a history of it.
Wheat T2 Fungicide Options:
Clayton Navaro™ & Clayton Pontoon™
- 125 g/L prothioconazole + 125 g/L tebuconazole
- T2 Support: Using 0.55 L/ha will give strong all-round disease activity, including Septoria and Yellow rust.
Clayton Canyon SC™
- 500 g/L folpet
- T2 Support: Using 1.0 L/ha will give strong Septoria protection following T1 and as a multisite provides an important alternative mode of action.
Clayton Tendril™
- 160 g/L prothioconazole + 300 g/L spiroxamine
- T2 Support: Using 0.5 L/ha will give wide-spectrum control of key disease targets including Septoria, Rusts, Powdery mildew and Eyespot.
Clayton Trellis™ & Clayton Finch™
- 160 g/L prothioconazole + 80 g/L tebuconazole
- T2 Support: Using 0.5 L/ha will give strong all-round disease activity, including Septoria and rusts.
Clayton Libra™ & Clayton Quintus™
- 62.5 g/L fluxapyroxad + 45 g/L metconazole
- T2 Support: Using 1.0 L/ha will give strong all-round disease activity, including Septoria and rusts.
Clayton Augusta™
- 250 g/L azoxystrobin
- T2 Support: Where Yellow rust pressure is high and persists after T1, consider using 0.4 L/ha at T2 in combination with other actives to improve knock-down activity on Yellow rust.
Clayton Tuskar™
- 250 g/L prothioconazole
- T2 Support: Using 0.55 L/ha will bolster activity against Fusarium, help Septoria eradicant activity and strengthen Eyespot control.
Clayton Tebucon™ 250 EW & Clayton Tebbit™
- 250 g/L tebuconazole
- T2 Support: Using 0.4 L/ha at T2 with other newer chemistry will provide good knock-down activity on Yellow rust and improved Brown rust activity.
T2 Strategy by Situation
Lower-risk situations
Later drilling, cleaner crops, lack of rain events, lower Septoria pressure, stronger varietal resistance.
- Focus on cost-effective broad-spectrum protection and maintain green leaf area.
Moderate-risk situations
Mixed disease pressure, recent rainfall, moderate varietal susceptibility.
- Prioritise balanced Septoria and rust protection with multisite support.
Higher-risk situations
Early drilling, susceptible varieties, thicker crops, rainfall and visible disease.
- Prioritise robust Septoria-led programmes with strong rust-active partners and multisite support.
