Maximise Grassland Quality Post-Silage with Smart Weed Control!

Posted on 30 June 2025

Don’t miss a final weed control opportunity in grassland this summer…

In grassland areas around the UK, post-silage cutting offers an ideal opportunity to control re-growth of troublesome broad-leaved weeds such as nettles, thistles and docks. Grassland weed control at this timing focuses on targeting weeds that have been encouraged to regrow after the first cut. This is an ideal time to apply herbicides to docks, thistles, and other broadleaf weeds, especially when they are *actively growing in their rosette stage.

Applying a foliar fertiliser alongside the herbicide can also help the grass recover and outcompete the weeds.

*Growers should always assess the weeds present and how actively growing they are before spraying, especially during periods of more prolonged dry, hot weather as of which some parts of the country are experiencing currently.

Timing is crucial

Actively growing weeds: Herbicides are most effective when applied to weeds that are actively growing and before they flower. For docks and thistles, this is often during the rosette stage.

Post-cut regrowth: After silage is cut, weeds will often regrow, presenting an opportunity for herbicide application.

Allow time for translocation: Ensure sufficient time (2-4 weeks, depending on the product) between spraying and the next cut or grazing to allow the herbicide to translocate to the roots for effective control.

Herbicide selection and application is vital.

Translocated herbicides: Choose herbicides that are absorbed by the plant and move through the vascular system to the roots (e.g. Clayton Docker).

Specific weed control: Consider using products like Clayton Docker for docks, or Clayton Flurry and Clayton Galley for a wider spectrum of weeds, including thistles, nettles, plantain and chickweed.

Application Rates: Follow product label recommendations for application rates and water volumes, often 2 litres/ha in 300-400 litres of water to ensure good coverage. Flexibility in terms of Tank Mixing with other fertilisers or inputs can also be important at this time of year in grassland pastures to encourage healthy regrowth of grass following cutting.
