Blackgrass Focus: Oilseed Rape
Posted on 20 September 2026
As blackgrass emerges, now is a crucial time to act and give OSR the best possible start.
Blackgrass remains a major challenge in OSR, potentially reducing yields and adding large amounts of seeds to the soil for subsequent cereal crops if not effectively controlled. Most blackgrass emerges in early autumn, coinciding with the main drilling and establishment period for oilseed rape.

Effective blackgrass management requires a planned, integrated approach.
Regularly monitor weed populations, review field history, plan suitable cultivations, and combine cultural controls with well-timed herbicide programmes to reduce pressure and protect long-term efficacy.
Without effective control, blackgrass can:
- Limit crop establishment and yield potential
- Produce large quantities of seed, increasing future weed pressure
- Make long-term resistance management more difficult
Clayton Gatso EC™ and Clayton Propose™ containing 120 g/L clethodim can form part of an early autumn post-emergence strategy, targeting actively growing black-grass and other problem grass weeds.
Application timing is essential.
For the most effective black-grass control, apply from the four-true-leaf stage to the six-leaf stage, or until the 15th of October (whichever comes first).
Following dry conditions over the summer and limited soil moisture, OSR drilling and crop establishment have been delayed in some areas, so it’s essential to monitor crops carefully and always check the latest product label and stewardship guidance before application.
